According to the legend, the story of the Mont Saint Michel starts at the beginning of the century. VIII, in 708, when the Bishop of Avranches, Aubert, receives the appearance of the Archangel Saint-Michel and the order to build a shrine dedicated to the Archangel Saint -Michel.
Several local buildings and homes are individually classified as historical monuments such as the parish church.
In the tenth century the Benedictines settled in the abbey and a small town was forming at his feet. During the Hundred Years War between France and England, Mont Saint-Michel was an impregnable fortress, resisting all English attempts to take it and constituting thus a symbol of French national identity. After the dissolution of religious orders dictated by the French 1789 to 1863 Revolution, the Mount was used as a prison.
